Note: Institutions established by firms engaged in similar activities to enable them to offset transactions with one another in order to limit payment settlements to net balances. Clearinghouses play an important role in settling transactions related to banks, railroads, stock and commodity exchanges, and international payments. The first modern bank clearinghouse was established in London in 1773, although the clearinghouse idea had been applied to various forms of trade in such places as Tokyo, Florence, and Lyon many centuries earlier. The first bank clearinghouse in the United States was established in New York in 1853.

Dutch ..... Instellingen die zijn opgericht door ondernemingen die vergelijkbare activiteiten uitvoeren, zodat ze in staat zijn om transacties met elkaar te verrekenen. Daardoor kunnen betalingsregelingen worden beperkt tot nettosaldi. Verrekenkantoren spelen een belangrijke rol bij de afwikkeling van transacties bij banken, spoorwegen, voorraad- en handelsbeurzen en internationale betalingen. Het eerste moderne verrekenkantoor werd in 1773 opgericht in Londen, hoewel het principe van een verrekenkantoor al vele eeuwen eerder werd toegepast op verschillende handelsvormen in steden als Tokio, Florence en Lyon. Het eerste verrekenkantoor in de Verenigde Staten werd in 1853 opgericht in New York.
