Note: Art, generally pictorial rather than sculptural, that depicts the unreal in a realistic manner. Works of 'fantastic art' may use Biblical, allegorical, or symbolic subject matter as departure points. The term is used to describe the work of artists from many periods and countries, but, most often, products of art tradition in Europe and the post-Columbian Americas. The term is not used for works from Medieval Europe, nor Oceanic or Asiatic cultures before the 20th century. While works from these latter cultures may exhibit depictions of the monstrous, mythological, or the unseen world, they lack the elements of eccentricity and willfull grotesquery that are hallmarks of the 'fantastic.'

| Dutch ..... Kunst, vaker afbeeldingen dan beeldhouwwerken, die het onwerkelijke op een realistische manier afbeeldt. Werken in de fantastische kunst kunnen Bijbelse, allegorische of symbolische onderwerpen als uitgangspunt nemen. De term wordt gebruikt voor het beschrijven van het werk van kunstenaars uit vele perioden en landen, maar het betreft meestal traditionele kunst uit Europa en Noord- en Zuid-Amerika na de ontdekking door Columbus. De term wordt niet gebruikt voor werken uit het middeleeuwse Europa en kunst van culturen uit Oceanië en Azië tot de 20ste eeuw. Hoewel werken uit deze laatste culturen afbeeldingen bevatten van een monsterlijke, mythologische of onzichtbare wereld, ontbreken de elementen van excentriciteit en opzettelijke groteskheid die kenmerkend zijn voor fantastische kunst. |

Obras de 'arte fantástica' podem usar assuntos bíblicos, alegóricos ou simbólicos como pontos de partida. O termo é usado para descrever o trabalho de artistas de vários períodos e países, mas, na maioria das vezes, produtos da tradição artística na Europa e nas Américas pós-colombianas. O termo não é usado para obras da Europa Medieval, nem para culturas oceânicas ou asiáticas antes do século XX. Embora os trabalhos dessas últimas culturas possam exibir representações do mundo monstruoso, mitológico ou invisível, eles não possuem os elementos de excentricidade e grotesca vontade que são características do "fantástico". |
