Record Type: concept
tintometers (fabric testers, <textile fabricating tools and equipment>, ... Furnishings and Equipment (hierarchy name))

Note: Precision instruments, comprising two identical tubes placed side by side, designed to determine the color of a sample of any substance and record it in terms of an arbitrary unit. To determine the sample's exact color, the device's first tube is filled with the sample to be examined; tinted glasses, which are graduated on a scale of color density, are inserted in the second tube and manipulated by the user until the colors in both tubes exactly match. Based on the observed correspondence between the sample color and the tinted glasses, the user is able to determine the degree of impurity or purity for the given substance of a certain color. The tintometer's invention is credited to Joseph W. Lovibond, who obtained a patent for the device in 1886. Though Lovibond initially created the tintometer to control beer quality by matching each batch to a color standard, his invention has since been applied to the textile industry, amongst other applications.
