In the context of archaeology, these are recognizable as circular patches of darkened earth, where wood has decayed, or the hole has later been filled with a different material. Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Kuil in de grond waarin een paal kon worden geplaatst. Herkenbaar als een ronde vlek waar de aarde verkleurd is, omdat het hout is vergaan of de kuil later is opgevuld met een ander materiaal. Paalgaten zijn belangrijk voor archeologen om het grondplan van vroegere bouwwerken te kunnen reconstrueren.
