Note: General term referring to several dissimilar plants. Among the best known lotuses are the following: The Egyptian lotus is a white water lily, Nymphaea lotus or the blue lotus (N. caerulea), seen as a motif in art and used ceremonially for its soporific and psychotropic properties. The lotus of the Greeks was the species Ziziphus lotus of the buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae), a bush native to southern Europe. It has large fruits containing a mealy substance that can be used for making bread and fermented drinks. In ancient times the fruits were an article of food among the poor, and a wine made from the fruit was thought to produce contentment and forgetfulness, as described in Homer. This is also probably the lotus mentioned in the Biblical Book of Job, where a large hippopotamus-like creature (behemoth) lies under the lotus tree. Homer also mentions the lotus as a kind of clover or trefoil that was food for horses, in this context perhaps Melilotus officinalis or a trefoil species of the Lotus genus. The sacred lotus of the Hindus was the waterlily Nelumbo nucifera, having white, blue, or pink flowers. The lotus tree, known to the Romans as the Libyan lotus, was probably the nettle tree of southern Europe, Celtis australis, a member of the elm family (Cannabaceae), with fruits like small cherries, first red and then black at maturity and mentioned by ancient writers for its hard, black wood, from which statues, flutes, etc. were carved.

| Dutch ..... Algemene benaming voor verschillende planten die niet met elkaar verwant zijn. De bekendste lotussen zijn de volgende. De Egyptische lotus is een witte waterlelie, Nymphaea lotus, of de blauwe lotus, N. caerulea. Bij de oude Egyptenaren waren deze planten een belangrijk motief op kunstvoorwerpen. Ook gebruikte men de planten tijdens ceremonies vanwege de slaapverwerkende en psychotrope eigenschappen. De lotus van de oude Grieken was de soort Ziziphus lotus uit de wegedoornfamilie (Rhamnaceae), een struik die inheems is in Zuid-Europa. De plant heeft grote vruchten met een meelachtige substantie waarmee men brood en gegiste dranken kan maken. In de oudheid waren de vruchten een voedingsmiddel voor arme mensen. Men geloofde dat de wijn die ervan werd gemaakt, zorgde voor een tevreden stemming en vergetelheid, zoals Homerus schreef. Dit is waarschijnlijk ook de lotus die wordt genoemd in het Bijbelboek Job, waarin een grote nijlpaardachtig wezen (Behemoth) wordt beschreven die onder een lotusboom ligt. Homerus beschrijft de lotus ook als een soort klaver of drieblad, een plant die door paarden werd gegeten, misschien Melilotus officinalis of een driebladsoort uit het geslacht Lotus. De heilige lotus van de hindoes was de waterlelie Nelumbo nucifera, een plant met witte, blauwe of roze bloemen. De lotusboom, die bij de Romeinen bekendstond als de Libische lotus, was waarschijnlijk de netelboom uit Zuid-Europa, Celtis australis, een lid van de iepenfamilie (Ulmaceae). Deze boom heeft vruchten die eruitzien als kleine kersen. Ze zijn eerst rood en daarna zwart als ze rijp zijn. De boom wordt genoemd door auteurs uit de oudheid vanwege zijn harde zwarte hout, waaruit men beelden, fluiten en andere objecten sneed. |
