Note: Refers to coarse lace or fringe made by knotting cords or thick threads in a geometric pattern. The term comes from Turkish "makrama," meaning "napkin," or "towel." It was a specialty of Genoa, where towels decorated with knotted cord were popular in the 19th century. The predecessor of macrame was the 16th-century technique of knotting lace known as "punto a groppo." In the 1960s macrame became a popular craft and creative art technique in America and in Europe. It has been used to create lampshades, plant hangers, hammocks, window coverings, and wall hangings.

Chinese (traditional) ..... 以繩子或粗線編成的粗質蕾絲或流蘇,多為幾何圖案。這個專有名詞源自土耳其文「makrama」,意為「餐巾」或「毛巾」。義大利熱那亞(Genoa)以編結著稱,十九世紀時,以編結裝飾毛巾的風氣在當地十分盛行。編結的前身為十六世紀稱之為「編結蕾絲」的技術。一九六○年代,流蘇蕾絲在美洲及歐洲成為十分流行的手工藝與創意藝術技巧,應用範圍包括:燈罩、植物掛鉤、吊床、窗簾、壁掛等。

De term is afgeleid van het Turkse 'makrama', dat 'doekje' of 'handdoek' betekent. Het was een specialiteit van Genua, waar met geknoopte touwen versierde handdoeken populair waren in de 19de eeuw. De voorloper van macramé was 'punto a groppo', een 16de-eeuwse techniek voor het knopen van kant. In de jaren 60 van de 20ste eeuw werd macramé een populaire ambacht- en kunsttechniek in Amerika en Europa. Het werd gebruikt voor lampenkappen, plantenhangers, hangmatten, raambedekkingen en wandbekleding.

In den 1960er Jahren wurde Macrame eine berühmte Fertigkeit und kreative Kunsttechnik in Amerika und Europa. Sie wurde für die Fertigung von Lampenschirmen, Pflanzenampeln, Hängematten, Gardinen und Wandbehängen verwendet. 
Spanish ..... Se refiere a un encaje o franja burdo hecho con cordeles o hilos gruesos anudados en un motivo geométrico. El término vino de Turquía, "makrama," que significa "servilleta" o "toalla." Fue especialmente en Génova donde se decoraron las toallas con cordeles anudados y fue popular en el siglo XIX. El predecesor del macramé fue una técnica de encaje anudado conocido como "punto a groppo" en el siglo XVI. En 1960 el macramé llegó a ser una artesanía popular y una técnica de arte creativo en América y Europa. Ha sido usado para crear pantallas de lámparas, colgaderos de plantas, hamacas, cortinas y cuelgas para la pared.
