Note: Small-format photographs affixed to card stock, popular in the mid-19th century. They went out of fashion in the 1870s. The photographs were typically portraits and the image was a standard size of 3 1/4 x 2 1/4 inches; they were generally produced by a multiple-lens camera that created several images on a single full-sized negative plate. Full-size prints from the plate were cut into sections measuring 4 x 2 1/2 inches, and the pieces were often mounted on cards, which initially served as visitors' cards; it later became the custom to exchange them on birthdays and holidays, and to collect cartes-de-visite of friends, family members, and celebrities in albums. Examples are card photographs patented by the Parisian photographer André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri in 1854 and similar items produced by Mathew B. Brady and other photographers.

Dutch ..... Verwijst naar kleine foto's, bevestigd op een kartonnen ondergrond, in het bijzonder de fotografische kaarten die de Parijse fotograaf André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri in 1854 patenteerde en soortgelijke kaarten gemaakt door Mathew B. Brady en andere fotografen. In de jaren 70 van de 19de eeuw raakten de kaarten, doorgaans portretten, uit de mode. De afbeelding was standaard 8,2 bij 5,7 cm. Vaak werd een camera met meerdere lenzen gebruikt om de foto's te maken, zodat op één negatiefplaat van normale grootte meerdere beelden werden vastgelegd. Door de volledige afdruk van de plaat vervolgens in stukken van 10,2 bij 6,4 cm te snijden en op opzetkarton te bevestigen, ontstonden de kaarten die aanvankelijk als visitekaartjes dienst deden. Later werd het gebruikelijk de foto's uit te wisselen op verjaardagen en tijdens vakanties, en deze visitekaartjes van vrienden, familieleden en beroemdheden te verzamelen in albums.

Bezeichnet ein kleinformatiges Foto, das auf einem Kartonträger befestigt ist, vor allem Visitenkartenfotos, die von dem Pariser Fotografen André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri 1854 patentiert wurden, und ähnliche Objekte, wie die des Fotografen Mathew B. Brady und anderen Fotografen. Sie kamen in den 1870er Jahren in Mode. Meist waren es Porträt-Fotos und hatten das Standart-Format 8,3 x 5,7 cm; sie wurden für gewöhnlich von einer Kamera mit Mehrfachoptik aufgenommen, die mehrere Bilder auf einer einzigen großformatigen Negativplatte machte. Die großformatigen Abzüge der Platte wurden in Teile mit den Maßen 10,2 x 6,4 cm zerschnitten und auf Karten befestigt, die ursprünglich als Gästekarten verwendet wurden; später wurde es Tradition, sie an Geburts- und Festtagen zu tauschen und Visitenkartenporträts von Freunden, Familienmitgliedern und Berühmtheiten in Alben zu sammeln.
