Note: Refers to tin-glazed European earthenware, particularly ware made in France, Germany, Spain, and Scandinavia. It developed in France in the early 16th century, was influenced by the technique and the designs of Italian maiolica, and is named for Faenza, Italy, which was famous for maiolica. It is distinguished from tin-glazed earthenware made in Italy, which is called "maiolica," and that made in the Netherlands and England, which is called "delftware." It has no connection to the ancient objects or material also named faience, which was developed in the Near East ca. 4500 BCE.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een Europees type aardewerk met tinglazuur dat met name werd vervaardigd in Frankrijk, Spanje, Duitsland en Scandinavië. De eerste faience werd begin 16de eeuw in Frankrijk geproduceerd, onder invloed van de techniek en ontwerpen van het Italiaanse majolica. De naam is afgeleid van de Italiaanse stad Faenza, die beroemd was om zijn majolica. De term dient te worden onderscheiden van 'majolica', het aardewerk met tinglazuur dat in Italië werd vervaardigd, en het 'Delfts aardewerk' uit Nederland en Engeland. Er is geen verband met de oude objecten of materialen die rond 4500 v. Chr. in het Nabije Oosten werden ontwikkeld en eveneens de naam 'faience' droegen. |

É diferente da louça esmaltada de estanho feita na Itália, que é chamada de "maiolica", e daquela feita na Holanda e na Inglaterra, que é chamada de "delftware". Não tem nenhuma conexão com os objetos ou materiais antigos também chamados faiança, que foi desenvolvido no Oriente Próximo ca. 4500 aC. |
| Spanish ..... Alude a loza europea de vidriado de estaño, particularmente la loza hecha en Francia, Alemania, España y Escandinavia. Se desarrolló en Francia a principios del siglo XVI, fue influenciada por la técnica y los diseños de la maiolica italiana, y su nombre viene de Faenza, Italia, la cual fue famosa por la maiólica. Se diferencia de la loza barnizada con estaño hecha en Italia, la cual es llamada mayólica, y aquella confeccionada en Holanda e Inglaterra, la que es llamada "Delft”. |
