Note: Refers to still lifes in which the objects depicted are overt reminders of mortality, the transcience of human life, and the ultimate worthlessness of earthly possessions, such as hourglasses, scales, mirrors, skulls, and symbols of wealth, learning, and power such as jewels, books, and armor. Such still lifes, unlike most others, have religious overtones. This type of still life, developed in Leiden, was especially popular in 17th-century Dutch painting. The name cames from a passage in the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 指稱畫作中所描繪的物件，明顯地提醒著必死性、人類生命的短暫，以及世俗財物最終亦將毫無價值的靜物畫，所呈現的物件如沙漏、刻度尺、鏡子、頭骨，以及象徵財富、學習及權力的物品如珠寶、書籍和盔甲等。不同於大部分的靜物畫，這類靜物畫帶有宗教隱喻的弦外之音。此類靜物畫發展於荷蘭的萊登，於西元十七世紀的荷蘭繪畫中特別受到歡迎。此一名詞的由來是源於聖經「傳道書」裡的一段經文。 |
| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar stillevens waarin de afgebeelde objecten overduidelijk refereren aan de sterfelijkheid, de vergankelijkheid van het menselijke leven en de uiteindelijke nutteloosheid van aardse bezittingen. Afgebeeld zijn bijvoorbeeld zandlopers, weegschalen, spiegels en doodshoofden, en symbolen van rijkdom, kennisverwerving en macht, zoals juwelen, boeken en wapens. Dergelijke stillevens zijn, in tegenstelling tot de meeste andere, religieus getint. Deze soort stillevens, die in Leiden ontstond, was vooral populair in de 17de-eeuwse Nederlandse schilderkunst. De naam is afkomstig uit een passage in het Bijbelboek Prediker. |

Bezieht sich auf ein Stillleben, auf dem die dargestellten Gegenstände offenkundige Mahnungen der Sterblichkeit, der Vergänglichkeit des menschlichen Lebens und der letztendlichen Wertlosigkeit von irdischen Gütern sind, wie etwa Sanduhren, Waagen, Spiegel, Totenköpfe, und Symbole von Reichtum, Bildung und Macht, wie etwa Juwelen, Bücher und Harnische. Solche Stillleben haben, anders als die meisten anderen, religiöse Andeutungen. Dieser Typus von Stillleben, in Leiden entwickelt, war besonders in der holländischen Malerei des 17. Jahrhunderts populär. Der Name kommt von einem Abschnitt im Buch Kohelet in der Bibel. |

Úsese para naturalezas muertas en que los objetos representados son recordatorios de la mortalidad, la fugacidad de la vida humana y la inutilidad última de las posesiones terrenales, tales como los relojes de arena, escaleras, espejos, cráneos y símbolos de riqueza, aprendizaje y poder tales como joyas, libros y armaduras, especialmente popular en la pintura holandesa del siglo XVII. |
