Note: Refers to the movement and style in 19th century America centered around the desire to understand nature through a realistic and detailed rendering of light and atmosphere in painting. The style features great sense of interior depth and depiction of magical aura through careful, invisible brushstrokes. The movement is thought to be inspired by the rise of photography and by the literary philosophies of Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) who advocated a meditative, pantheistic communion with nature and the landscape. Later, the style was superceded by the techniques of Impressionism.

Verwijst naar de stroming en de stijl in de schilderkunst in het 19de-eeuwse Amerika waarin het verlangen centraal stond de natuur te doorgronden door licht en sfeer realistisch en gedetailleerd weer te geven. De stijl kenmerkt zich door een sterk gevoel van innerlijke diepte en het creëren van een magische sfeer met nauwkeurige, onzichtbare penseelstreken. Aangenomen wordt dat de stroming werd geïnspireerd door de opkomst van de fotografie en door de literaire filosofieën van Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), die een meditatieve, pantheïstische verbondenheid met de natuur en het landschap propageerde. Later werd deze stijl verdrongen door de technieken van het impressionisme. |
