Note: The format created by folding a sheet of paper twice. It is typically more square in shape than a folio and can be of varying sizes. A common example is a book between octavo and folio in size, approximately 11 x 13 inches. To make a quarto, a sheet of paper is folded twice, forming four leaves or eight pages. Another example is a mid-sized newspaper, about 9 x 12 inches, again made by folding a sheet twice. For books, when laid paper is used, the chain lines are horizontal. The quarto was considered the most elegant format for published works in England in the early 18th century. With the mechanization of the printing industry in the 19th century, librarians began to apply the term based on the size rather than the way a book was constructed.

| Dutch ..... In algemene zin is kwarto het boekformaat dat resulteert nadat een vel papier twee keer is gevouwen. Meestal is de vorm vierkanter dan bij folio en de afmetingen kunnen variëren. In specifieke zin kan ermee worden verwezen naar een boek met een formaat tussen octavo en folio (circa 280 x 330 mm). Een kwartoformaat wordt bereikt door een vel papier twee keer te vouwen, waardoor vier bladen of acht pagina's ontstaan. Daarnaast kan kwarto verwijzen naar een krant van middelgroot formaat, circa 230 x 305 mm, die eveneens wordt gemaakt door een vel papier twee keer te vouwen. Bij boeken van vergépapier lopen de kettinglijnen horizontaal. Begin 18de eeuw werd kwarto in Engeland als het meest elegante formaat voor boekpublicaties beschouwd. In de 19de eeuw, toen de mechanisatie zijn intrede deed in de boekdrukkunst, gingen bibliothecarissen de term gebruiken om te verwijzen naar het formaat van het boek in plaats van naar de vervaardigingsmethode. |

El término puede referirse especialmente para un libro de formato entre un octavo y un folio, con aproximadamente 11 x 13 pulgadas. Para realizar un quarto, el pliego de papel debe doblarse dos veces formando cuatro hojas u ocho páginas. También se refiere a un periódico de tamaño mediano, aproximadamente de 9 x 12 pulgadas, nuevamente como resultado de doblar dos veces un pliego. En libros en que se emplee papel normal, se dispondrá de una línea horizontal en la dirección natural. El quarto fue considerado el formato más elegante para publicaciones aparecidas en la Inglaterra de comienzos del siglo XVIII. Con la mecanización de la industria impresora en siglo XIX los bibliotecarios comenzaron a usar el término basado en la dimensión más que en la manera en que se arma un libro. |
