Note: Species of broad-leafed grass, about 1.5 to 5 m (5 to 16.5 feet) in height, with feathery flower clusters and stiff, smooth stems, occurring along the margins of lakes, fens, marshes, and streams from the Arctic to the tropics. It is one of the most widely distributed plants in the world, with fruits borne in parachute-like containers that are carried by the wind. It is also one of the most successful plants in dominating appropriate habitats due to rhizomes that rapidly infest moist-to-saturated soils of swamps, ponds, streams, and banks to the eventual exclusion of almost all other plants. Dried stems have been used for millennia as thatching and construction material, in basketry, for arrows, pens, and musical instruments. They also are harvested for their cellulose content.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 寬葉禾本物種，約1.5到5公尺（5到16.5英呎）高，具有羽毛似的花簇及硬挺光滑的莖，分佈地區由北極區到熱帶地區沿湖岸、沼澤、濕地、溪流邊緣皆有，是世界上其中一種分佈最廣的植物，其果實結在降落傘狀的容器中透過風媒介傳送。蘆葦也是最能夠成功拓展支配合適生長領域的植物之一，因為其地下莖會快速蔓延於沼澤、池塘、溪流以及沙洲的飽和含水土壤，最後終至排除幾乎所有其他的植物。蘆葦的乾燥枝幹在幾千年以來被用來蓋屋頂、作建材、編籃子、做箭矢、筆桿及樂器等。蘆葦的栽種是為了取其纖維成分。 |
| Dutch ..... Grassoort met brede bladeren die ongeveer 1,5 tot 5 meter hoog wordt. De planten hebben veervormige bloementrosjes en gladde stijve stengels. Ze groeien langs oevers van meren en waterstromen en in watergebieden en moerassen. Riet komt voor van de tropen tot de Arctische gebieden en is een van de meest wijdverspreide planten in de wereld. De vruchten zitten in parachuteachtige houders die worden meegevoerd door de wind. Tevens is het een van de meest geschikte planten om natte gebieden in moerassen en langs meertjes en waterstromen droog te maken. In dergelijke gebieden verspreidt de plant zich snel en hebben andere planten uiteindelijk weinig kans om te groeien. De stengels worden al duizenden jaren gebruikt als bouwmateriaal, bijvoorbeeld als dakbedekking, en voor het maken van manden, pijlen, pennen en muziekinstrumenten. Men oogst riet ook vanwege de cellulose in de plant. |

| Spanish ..... Especie de hierba de hoja ancha, de 1,5 a 5 m (5 a 16,5 pies) de altura, con racimos de flores plumosas y tallos rígidos y lisos, que se dan a lo largo de los márgenes de los lagos, pantanos, ciénagas y arroyos desde el Ártico hasta los trópicos. Es una de las plantas más distribuidas en el mundo, con frutos que nacen en recipientes parecidos a paracaídas que son transportados por el viento. También es una de las plantas más exitosas en el dominio de los hábitats apropiados debido a los rizomas que infestan rápidamente los suelos húmedos a saturados de pantanos, estanques, arroyos y riberas hasta la eventual exclusión de casi todas las demás plantas. Los tallos secos se han utilizado durante milenios como material de paja y construcción, en cestería, para flechas, plumas e instrumentos musicales. También se cosechan por su contenido de celulosa. |
