Note: Describes motion picture film that is 8 millimeters wide, the narrowest gauge available for such film. Introduced in 1932 for use by amateur filmmakers and for home movies, 8mm film was also taken up by filmmakers of the avant0garde and the underground, due to the comparatively low cost of the film stock and the processing. Since the mid-1960s, standard 8mm film has been generally superceded by the Super 8 type.

Dutch ..... Beschrijft speelfilm met een beeldbreedte van 8 millimeter (smalfilm), de smalste beeldbreedte die voor dergelijke films beschikbaar is. Het formaat werd in 1932 geïntroduceerd voor gebruik door amateurfilmers en voor thuisgebruik, en werd eveneens omarmd door avant-garde- en undergroundfilmers, vanwege de betrekkelijk lage kosten van het filmmateriaal en van het ontwikkelen ervan. Sinds het midden van de jaren 60 is standaard 8-millimeterfilm vrijwel overal verdrongen door Super 8-film. 
Spanish ..... Describe cinta de película cinematográfica de 8 milímetros de ancho, la medida más angosta disponible para tal film. Introducida en 1932 por productores de películas de aficionados y para películas caseras, la cinta 8mm fue ocupada también por fabricantes de películas de movimientos de vanguardia y underground debido a los comparativamente bajos costos de la cinta y de elaboración. Desde mediados de los años 1960s, la cinta estándar de 8mm ha sido reemplazada por el tipo Súper 8.
