Note: Fluorescence-lifetime imaging microscopy or FLIM is an imaging technique for producing molecular images based on the fluorescence lifetime (the average time that the molecule spends in the excited state) from a fluorescent sample.The lifetime of the fluorophore signal, rather than its intensity, is used to create the image in FLIM. The fluorescence lifetime can function as a molecular stopwatch to observe a variety of events.The technique is thus particularly suitable for live-cell imaging.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Een beeldvormingstechniek waarmee moleculaire beelden geproduceerd kunnen worden op basis van de fluorescentieduur (de gemiddelde tijd dat het molecuul zich in deze geëxciteerde toestand bevindt) van een fluorescent monster. In deze techniek wordt dus niet de intensiteit van de fluorescentie, maar de duur ervan gebruikt om een beeld te produceren. Deze tijdsduur kan fungeren als een moleculaire stopwatch, waarmee verscheidene gebeurtenissen vastgelegd kunnen worden. De techniek is dan ook bijzonder geschikt voor het in beeld brengen van levende cellen.
