Note: Colorless, odorless, highly flammable gas, the simplest alkane. Methane occurs in natural gas, as firedamp in coal mines, and is produced by decaying vegetation and in the guts of ruminants. Methane is used as a fuel, and as a starting material in manufacture of chemicals. Methane carried into the stratosphere by rising air acts as a greenhouse gas and degrades the ozone layer.

| Dutch ..... Een kleurloos, geurloos en licht ontvlambaar gas; de simpelste vorm van alkaan. Methaan komt voor in natuurlijke gassen en als grauwvuur in koolmijnen, en wordt geproduceerd door rottende planten en in de ingewanden van herkauwers. Het wordt gebruikt als brandstof en als basismateriaal voor de productie van chemicaliën. Methaan dat opstijgt tot in de stratosfeer is een broeikasgas en tast de ozonlaag aan. |
