Note: Named after the first-century BCE physician Philon of Tarsus. To relieve pain, induce sleep, prevent miscarriages, and reduce the pain of hemorrhoids and of heavy menstruation, pharmacists offered this drug, made from such ingredients as opium, saffron, white pepper, pearls, and amber.

Het werd gemaakt van ingrediĆ«nten als opium, saffraan, witte peper, parels en amber, en apothekers boden het aan om slaap op te wekken, miskramen te voorkomen, en om pijn in het algemeen en meer specifiek de pijn van aambeien of hevige menstruatie te verlichten.
