Dutch ..... De variant van de Germaanse taal die zich ontwikkelde na ongeveer 1100 n. Chr., en die gebaseerd was op de Opperduitse dialecten Alemannisch en Beiers, die in het zuidelijkste deel van Duitsland waren opgekomen. In het Middelhoogduits bestond een uitgebreide literatuur, waartoe onder andere het vroeg-13de-eeuwse heldendicht 'Nibelungenlied' behoort.
