Note: First period of the Cenozoic, comprising the major portion of the era. It extends from 65.8 million to 2.6 million years ago. The Tertiary is subdivided into five epochs: Paleocene, Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene, and Pliocene. Some authorities, chiefly European, have lately replaced the Tertiary with two new time divisions: Paleogene (comprising the earlier three epochs of the period) and Neogene (covering the final two).

Dutch ..... Eerste periode van het Cenozoïcum, die het merendeel van die era duurde, van ongeveer 65,8 miljoen tot 2,6 miljoen jaar geleden. Het tertiair wordt onderverdeeld in vijf tijdvakken: het paleoceen, eoceen, oligoceen, mioceen en plioceen. Sommige autoriteiten, vooral in Europa, hebben recentelijk het tertiair vervangen door twee nieuwe tijdsdelen: het paleogeen (bestaande uit de eerste drie tijdvakken van de periode) en het neogeen (bestaande uit de laatste twee).
