Note: Technique used on Ancient Greek pottery in which black decoration appears silhouetted on a red ground through painting and a two-stage firing process. In the process, a refined slip of clay, iron oxide, wood ash, and rain water was used to paint decorations on the object. Details were incised into the black figures or applied in purple or white pigment. It developed in Corinth ca. 720 BCE; the technique was later replaced by the more sophisticated red-figure vase painting.

| Dutch ..... Techniek die werd toegepast in de oud-Griekse pottenbakkerskunst, waarin de zwarte decoratie, die door schildering en een bakproces met twee stadia werd aangebracht, in silhouet afsteekt tegen de rode achtergrond. Men gebruikte een geraffineerd slib van klei, ijzeroxide, houtas en regenwater om de decoratie op het object te schilderen. Details werden in de zwarte figuren gegrift of aangebracht in paars of wit pigment. Deze techniek werd ontwikkeld in Korinthe rond 720 v.Chr. en werd later vervangen door de meer verfijnde roodfigurige stijl. |
| Italian ..... Tecnica utilizzata sulle ceramiche dell'antica Grecia in cui la decorazione nera appare stagliata su uno sfondo rosso attraverso la pittura e un processo di fornace a due stadi. Nel processo, un raffinato pezzo di argilla, ossido di ferro, cenere di legno, e acqua piovana sono stati usati per dipingere decorazioni sull'oggetto. I dettagli sono stati incisi nelle figure nere o applicati in pigmento viola o bianco. Si è sviluppato a Corinto ca. 720 a.C.; la tecnica è stata successivamente sostituita dalla più sofisticata ceramica a figure rosse. |
