Note: Elegant seaside villas built along the coasts of Italy by members of the Roman elite beginning by the late second century BC. The extravagant pursuits associated with the villa maritima were contrasted in ancient Roman literature with the austere and responsible virtues of its countryside counterpart, the villa rustica, which came equipped with working farm. Villae maritimae generally conformed to one of two basic architectural types, the peristyle and porticus villa plans. |

Dutch ..... Elegante villa's aan zee, aan de Italiaanse kusten gebouwd door leden van de Romeinse elite vanaf het eind van de 2e eeuw v.Chr. De extravagante activiteiten die werden geassocieerd met de villa maritima, werden in de oud-Romeinse literatuur opgevoerd als contrast met de sobere en verantwoordelijke deugden van zijn tegenpool op het platteland, de villa rustica, waar een boerderij bij hoorde. Villae maritimae waren volgens een van twee basisindelingen gebouwd, peristyle en porticus. |
