Note: Used in an ecological context to describe a large class of nitrogen oxide gases produced in combustion which occur as atmospheric pollutants. Colorless, poisonous gas formed when nitric acid reacts with copper or when ammonia reacts with platinum. It is produced in combustion engine processes such as automobile emissions, resulting in acid rain and photochemical smog. It is also an important messenger molecule in mammals and other animals, produced through cellular metabolism, and involved in oxygen transmission, blood pressure regulation, and other physiological activities.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... De term wordt in ecologisch verband gebruikt voor een grote klasse verbindingen van stikstof en zuurstof die bij verbranding worden geproduceerd en de lucht verontreinigen. Het zijn kleurloze, giftige gassen die ontstaan wanneer salpeterzuur reageert met koper of wanneer ammonia reageert met platina. Ze worden geproduceerd in verbrandingsmotoren van bijvoorbeeld auto's, met zure regen en fotochemische smog tot gevolg. Stikstofoxide is ook een belangrijke boodschappermolecuul in zoogdieren en andere dieren, die via celmetabolisme wordt geproduceerd en die betrokken is bij zuurstofoverdracht, regulering van de bloeddruk en andere fysiologische activiteiten.
