Note: Ancient inhabitants of Sicily in the area west of the Gelas River. According to ancient Greek writers, the Sicani were the aboriginal inhabitants of central Sicily, as distinguished from the Siculi of eastern Sicily and the Elymi of western Sicily. Archaeologically there is no substantial difference between Sicani and Siculi (Sicels) in historical times, but the Greek historian Thucydides believed the Sicani to be Iberians from Spain who were driven by the invading Siculi into the central parts of the island.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Oude bewoners van het gebied ten westen van de rivier de Gelas op Sicilië. Volgens klassieke Griekse schrijvers waren de Sicani de oorspronkelijke bewoners van centraal-Sicilië, zoals de Sicelen oost-Sicilië bewoonden en de Elymianen west-Sicilië. Archeologisch gezien is er in historische tijden geen wezenlijk verschil tussen Sicani en Sicelen, maar de Griekse historicus Thucydides nam aan dat de Sicani Iberiërs uit Spanje waren die door de invasie van de Sicelen naar het centrale deel van het eiland waren verdreven.
