Note: Artisan or merchant class of people that lived in urban areas and are associated with the production of much of the art, music, literature and drama in Japan during the Edo period (1615-1868). This class includes both wealthy financiers and wholesale merchants as well as low income artisans, peddlers, and day laborers. The term is often translated as "townspeople" or "townsmen".
