Note: Members of a species of hominid found in tropical forests and wet savannas of western and central Africa, although their habitat was formerly much larger. They are characterized by a body that is mostly covered by dark brown hair, having thumbs and its big toes that are opposable, and differing from the other extant species of the genus Pan, bonobos, in being more robust, having a more protruding face, spending more time out of the trees, and having different behaviors and dynamics in social groups. In older classifications, the bonobo and the common chimpanzee were classified as one species.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 人科動物的一個品種，出沒於中西非的熱帶森林與濕草原，但比從前的棲地小許多。牠們的身體大部分被深棕色毛髮覆蓋，具有對生的拇指與大腳指，不同於黑猩猩屬的現存種侏儒黑猩猩，其身形較健壯，臉部較突出，不在樹上的時間較多，兩者在社會團體內的行為與互動亦不同。早期的分類將侏儒黑猩猩與一般黑猩猩歸為同一品種。 |
| Dutch ..... Soort hominide die voorkomt in tropische bossen en op natte savannen in het westen en midden van Afrika, hoewel hun verspreidingsgebied vroeger veel groter was. Ze hebben een lichaam dat grotendeels is bedekt met donkerbruin haar en duimen en grote tenen die opponeerbaar zijn. De verschillen met de andere bestaande soort uit het genus Pan, de bonobo, zijn de volgende: chimpansees hebben een robuuster lichaam en een gezicht dat verder vooruitsteekt, ze brengen minder tijd door in de bomen en vertonen ander gedrag, bijvoorbeeld de sociale dynamiek in groepen is anders. In oudere classificaties werden de bonobo en de gewone chimpansee als één soort beschouwd. |
