Note: Order containing around 180 species in two families of nocturnal raptorial birds with hooked beaks, strong talons, and soft plumage. All owls have the same general appearance, which is characterized by a flat face, small hooked beak, short tail, round wings, and large, forward-facing eyes. The bird became associated with Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and also owls became symbolic of intelligence because it was thought that they could forsee events. Also, because of their nocturnal existence and hooting sounds, owls have also been symbols associated with the occult. In the Middle Ages, the owl became a symbol of the darkness before the coming of Christ.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 目名，目下有兩個科，包含約180個物種，為夜行性猛禽，具鉤狀喙、強有力的爪、柔軟的羽毛。所有鴞的一般外觀均相同，其特徵為：扁平臉、小型鉤喙、短尾、圓翅、以及大而向前視的雙眼。此種鳥常與希臘的智慧女神雅典娜聯想在一起，過去有人認為牠們可以預見事情，因而也成為智慧的象徵，且因其夜行性及叫聲，鴞也帶有神秘的色彩，並在中世紀時象徵基督來臨前的黑暗。 |
| Dutch ..... Orde van 2 families en ongeveer 180 soorten nachtelijke roofvogels met een haaksnavel, sterke klauwen en zachte veren. Alle uilen hebben dezelfde algemene vorm: een plat gezicht, een kleine haaksnavel, een korte staart, ronde vleugels en grote, naar voren gerichte ogen. Men associeerde de vogels met Athene, de Griekse godin van de wijsheid. Uilen werden ook een symbool van intelligentie, omdat men geloofde dat ze gebeurtenissen konden voorspellen. Door het nachtelijke bestaan van de dieren en het oehoe-geluid dat ze maken, zijn uilen daarnaast vaak beschouwd als symbolen van het occulte. In de Middeleeuwen werd de uil een symbool van de duisternis die voor de komst van Christus heerste. |
