Note: An optical effect manifested as a series of alternating light and dark colored bands; generally caused when one piece of glass with a curved surface rests on another with a flat surface, resulting in an interference of light waves. Named for the English physicist Sir Isaac Newton who first investigated their properties.

| Dutch ..... Een optisch effect dat zich manifesteert als een reeks afwisselend licht en donker gekleurde ringen. Het wordt meestal veroorzaakt door een stuk glas met een rond oppervlak dat ligt op een ander stuk met een plat oppervlak. Hierdoor ontstaat een interferentie van lichtgolven. Genoemd naar de Engelse natuurkundige Sir Isaac Newton, die als eerste onderzoek verrichtte naar de eigenschappen van de ringen. |
