Note: Ancient objects made from a composite material consisting of a body of sintered quartz coupled with an alkaline glaze surface. Faience was used for decorating beads, amulets, figurines, and other small objects. Invented in Mesopotamia or Iran ca. 4500 BCE, the production of faience continued until the mid-7th century CE. It is distinguished from later European earthenware, which is known by the same name.

Dutch ..... Verwijst naar oude objecten die zijn vervaardigd uit een samengesteld materiaal dat bestaat uit een romp van gesinterde kwarts in combinatie met een oppervlak van alkalisch glazuur. Faience werd gebruikt voor het decoreren van kralen, amuletten, beeldjes en andere kleine voorwerpen. Faience is circa 4500 v. Chr. uitgevonden in Mesopotamië of Iran en werd tot halverwege de 7de eeuw n. Chr. geproduceerd. Er is geen relatie met de gelijknamige term waarmee Europees aardewerk wordt beschreven. 
German ..... Bezieht sich auf ein antikes Objekt aus kombinierten Materialien, bestehend aus einem Körper aus gesintertem Quarzglas und einer alkalischen Glasuroberfläche. Fayencen wurde für die Verzierung von Perlen, Amuletten, Figuren und anderen kleinen Objekten verwendet. Erfunden in Mesopotamien oder Iran ca. 4500 v. Chr. dauerte die Herstellung von Fayencen bis in die Mitte des 7. Jahrhunderts an. Es ist von späterem europäischem Steingut, das mit dem gleichen Namen bekannt ist, zu unterscheiden.
