In algemeen wetenschappelijk gebruik, kaarten die bestaan uit een aantal lijnen die zo zijn geplaatst en gerangschikt dat, wanneer bekende waarden op twee lijnen met behulp van een liniaal met een rechte lijn worden verbonden, op het snijpunt met een andere lijn een gezochte waarde kan worden afgelezen.
