Note: The art of creating elaborate flourishes to decorate the margins or otherwise blank spaces in a work of calligraphy. Especially common in European copybooks of the 17th and early 18th centuries, the technique often resulted in images of animals, plants or human composed of a single line, or having that appearance.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... De kunst van het maken van verfijnde decoraties om de marges of delen van een kalligrafisch werk die anders leeg zouden blijven, te versieren. Deze techniek werd veel gebruikt in 17de- en 18de-eeuwse Europese schoonschrijfboeken en leverde vaak afbeeldingen van dieren, planten of mensen op die (schijnbaar) uit één enkele lijn bestonden. 
Spanish ..... El arte de crear adornos en los márgenes o los espacios en blanco, es un trabajo de la caligrafía. Especialmente común en los libros europeos del los siglos XVII y XVIII. Esta técnica dio lugar a menudo a imágenes de animales, de plantas o del ser humano integrados por una sola línea.
