Note: Narrow strips of closely woven cloth across the back of a book to which the sections are sewn. Distinguished from "thongs (binding components)" which are narrow strips of rawhide or processed animal skin that served the same purpose early in the development of flexible sewing, and "cords (binding components)" which are twisted strands of fibrous material that replaced thongs by the latter part of the 16th century.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Smalle stroken dicht geweven stof, aangebracht tegen de rug van een boek, waaraan de boekdelen vastgenaaid worden. Onderscheiden van 'naairiemen'; dit zijn smalle stroken ongelooide of bewerkte huid die voor hetzelfde doel gebruikt werden in de vroege stadia van het flexibel naaien. Tevens onderscheiden van 'touwen (boekbandonderdelen)'; dit zijn strengen van vezelig materiaal die riempjes vervingen tegen het einde van de zestiende eeuw.
