Note: Members of a common species of rat known worldwide. Despite its name, the black rat exhibits several color forms. As the brown rat, the black rat has exploited human food resources, moved all over the world with humans, and is often considered a pest because it has killed small livestock and native species, and spread certain diseases among humans. The black rat originated in tropical Asia and spread through the Near East in Roman times before reaching Europe by the 6th century and spreading with Europeans across the world. Today it is again largely confined to warmer areas, having been supplanted by the brown rat in cooler regions.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 為極其普遍，全世界皆可見的鼠種。儘管名為黑鼠，卻具幾種不同的顏色。如褐鼠一樣，黑鼠侵佔人類的食物資源，隨人類遷徙至世界各地，因為牠們會捕殺小型牲畜與當地物種，也會在人群中散播疾病，而常被視為害蟲。黑鼠源於亞洲熱帶地區，於羅馬時代傳遍近東，再於六世紀抵達歐洲，隨著歐洲人散佈全世界。今日大部分玄鼠的活動範圍侷限於較溫暖的地區，較寒冷的地區，則由褐鼠取而代之。 |
