Note: Refers to the period associated with the city Thonburi established in 1767 by the military leader Taskin after defeating invading armies and seizing political power. The style of this period is driven by the renewed sense of military might and political unification. In painting, the style features murals depicting Buddhist subject matter, Thai landscapes, and details showing the plans and construction of buildings. Wall paintings usually decorated the interiors of royal buildings or temples. In this period, temple and palace building programs prospered, featuring the Chakri Maha Prasat and the Wat Arun, a Chinese-inspired temple featuring bell towers and porcelain-covered tympana and also distinctively Thai details such as domestic teak dwellings for monks. In sculpture, the period is seen in large statues of Buddha in royal attire made of gilded and lacquered stucco and bronze and decorated with inlaid mother-of-pearl. Giant guardians such as mythical half-human, half-bird figures and apsarasas and Chinese stone statues embellish temple courtyards of this period.

Verwijst naar de periode die wordt geassocieerd met de stad Thonburi, die in 1767 werd gesticht door de militaire leider Taskin nadat deze binnenvallende legers had verslagen en de politieke macht had gegrepen. In de stijl van deze periode staat het hernieuwde gevoel van militaire macht en politieke eenwording centraal. In de schilderkunst manifesteerde de stijl zich op muurschilderingen waarop boeddhistische onderwerpen, Thaise landschappen en details over de plattegronden en de constructie van gebouwen worden afgebeeld. Muurschilderingen decoreerden meestal de interieuren van koninklijke gebouwen of tempels. In deze periode floreerden bouwprogramma's voor tempels en paleizen, onder andere voor de Chakri Maha Prasat en de Wat Arun, een Chinees geïnspireerde tempel die wordt gekenmerkt door klokkentorens en met porselein bedekte timpanen, en door Thaise details zoals teakwoningen voor monniken. In de beeldhouwkunst manifesteert deze periode zich in grote beelden van Boeddha in koninklijke kledij die zijn gemaakt van verguld en gelakt stucwerk en gedecoreerd met ingelegd paarlemoer. Reusachtige bewakers zoals mythische half-menselijke, half-vogelachtige figuren en apsarasa's en Chinese stenen beelden verfraaien de binnenhoven van tempels in deze periode. |
