Note: Distinctive genre in painting and other media, but most prominently in woodblock printing. It arose in the Edo period (1600-1868) and built up a broad popular market among the middle classes. Subject matter typically focused on brothel districts and kabuki theatres, with formats ranging from single sheet prints to book illustrations. Generally, the style is characterized by a mixture of the realistic narrative of the Kamakura period and the mature decorative style of the Momoyama and Edo periods. Distinctive styles and specialties in subject matter were developed by different schools throughout the period.

Chinese (traditional) ..... 泛指江戶時期(西元1600年至1868年)興起,在中產階級廣受歡迎的藝術類型,木刻版印刷為主要類型。主題典型著重於妓院與歌舞妓劇場,包括單張版畫與書籍插圖等格式。風格特色融合了鎌倉時期的寫實描繪,以及成熟的桃山與江戶裝飾風格。該時期有不同派別發展出主題鮮明的風格與特色。 
Dutch ..... Verwijst in algemene zin naar een kunstgenre dat ontstond in de Edo-periode (1600-1868) en dat met name bekend is geworden door de houtgravures; de afdrukken werden gemaakt op losse vellen of fungeerden als boekillustraties. Het genre genoot een brede populariteit onder de bourgeoisie. Belangrijkste inspiratiebronnen waren de bordelen en kaboekitheaters. Doorgaans wordt de stijl gekenmerkt door een mengelmoes van realistische verhalende episoden uit de Kamakura-periode en de gerijpte decoratieve stijl van de Momoyama- en Edo-periode. Diverse scholen hebben in de loop van deze periode hun eigen stijl en specifieke themakeuze ontwikkeld.

Spanish ..... Se refiere ampliamente a un género del arte, principalmente al medio del bloque de madera que imprime, se presentó en el período del Edo (1600-1868) y acumuló un amplio mercado popular entre las clases medias. El tema se centró típicamente en distritos del burdel y los teatros del kabuki, el formato se extendiende en una sola hoja impresa con ilustraciones. Generalmente, el estilo es caracterizado por una mezcla de la narrativa realista del período de Kamakura y del estilo decorativo maduro de los períodos de Momoyama y del Edo. Los estilos y las especialidades distintivas del tema fueron desarrollados por diversas escuelas a través del período.
