Note: Refers to a process or state of creating colors by mixing pigments, paints, dyes, or inks. Such colors are perceived by the eye depending upon the degree to which they absorb some wavelengths of light and reflect others; unlike with an additive color system, the object itself does not emit color or light. An object appears to have color due to the section of the electromagnetic spectrum that is reflected by it combined with the sections of the spectrum that are absorbed. Thus, a subtractive color system refers to light absorbed or reflected by the primary pigment colors, which are used to produce the other colors, as laid out in the CMYK color model. Combining one of these subtractive primary colors with equal amounts of another primary creates the subtractive secondary colors, a secondary color combined with a primary produces a tertiary color, and combining two complementary colors produces black.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een procedé of toestand waarbij kleuren ontstaan door vermenging van pigmenten, verven, kleurstoffen of inkten. De waarneming van deze kleuren wordt bepaald door de mate waarin ze sommige golflengten van licht absorberen en andere golflengten weerkaatsen; het verschil met een additief kleursysteem is dat het object zelf geen kleur of licht uitstraalt. De kleur die het object zelf lijkt te bezitten, wordt bepaald door het specifieke deel van het elektromagnetisch spectrum dat erdoor wordt weerkaatst, in samenhang met de geabsorbeerde delen van het spectrum. Een subtractief kleurensysteem verwijst naar het licht dat wordt geabsorbeerd of weerkaatst door de primaire pigmentkleuren, waarmee vervolgens de andere kleuren worden geproduceerd, overeenkomstig het CYMK-kleurenmodel. Door het combineren van één of twee van deze subtractieve primaire kleuren met gelijke hoeveelheden van een andere primaire kleur ontstaat een subtractieve secundaire kleur, een secundaire kleur samen met een primaire kleur geeft een tertiaire kleur, en door het combineren van twee complementaire kleuren ontstaat zwart. |
