Note: Refers to the style of art and architecture that flourished in Portugal and her colonies, beginning in the late 14th century and lasting into the mid-16th century. The style is named afer Manuel I, King of Portugal (ruled 1495-1521), and it developed as a national style and conscious rejection of Spanish style. The style is characterized by the merging of Late Gothic style with inventive references to Portuguese voyages, particularly in symbolism and lavish ornament. New themes include lush foliate and nautical designs, and references to the exotic, including Islamic art.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar de stijl in de kunst en architectuur die vanaf het eind van de 14de eeuw tot aan het midden van de 16de eeuw bloeide in Portugal en zijn kolonies. De stijl is genoemd naar Manuel I, koning van Portugal (van 1495-1521). De stijl groeide uit tot nationale stijl die zich bewust van de Spaanse stijl afzette. De stijl kenmerkt zich door de vermenging van de laatgotische stijl met inventieve verwijzingen naar Portugese reizen, die vooral tot uiting komen in de symboliek en de overdadige ornamenten. Nieuwe thema’s bestaan uit weelderige bladachtige en nautische motieven en verwijzingen naar het exotische, waaronder de islamitische kunst. |
