Note: Refers to the period and style associated with the Normans, who were Norsemen from Denmark, Norway, and Iceland who raided the European coasts in the eighth and ninth centuries CE, settled in northern France in the early tenth century, reigned over the indigenous Frankish population, adopted their language, and eventually founded the duchy of Normandy. From Normandy, the Normans expanded to the British Isles, southern Italy, and Sicily. The style is particularly evident in designs of weapons and armor, the motte-and-bailey castle, and grand Romanesque ecclesiastical and monastic structures. The style is characterized by the brilliant adaptation and exploitation of indigenous local styles combined with some influences of the Byzantine east, which were introduced to the area by Norman adventurers and pilgrims.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar de periode en stijl die in verband worden gebracht met de Normandiërs, die bestonden uit Noormannen uit Denemarken, Noorwegen en IJsland en die in de 8ste en 9de eeuw de Europese kusten afstroopten om zich vervolgens, aan het begin van de 10de eeuw, in het noorden van Frankrijk te vestigen. Zij overheersten de inheemse Frankische bevolking, namen hun taal over en vestigden uiteindelijk het hertogdom Normandië. Vanuit Normandië verspreidden de Normandiërs zich naar de Britse eilanden, Zuid-Italië en Sicilië. De stijl is vooral duidelijk zichtbaar in het ontwerp van de wapens en wapenrusting, in het kasteel op een heuvel omgeven door palissaden, en in de grote kerk- en kloostergebouwen in romaanse stijl. De stijl kenmerkt zich door het helder toepassen en gebruiken van inheemse lokale stijlen in combinatie met een aantal invloeden uit het Byzantijnse oosten. Deze werden door avonturiers en pelgrims in de door de Normandiërs beheerste gebieden geïntroduceerd. |
