Note: Refers to the style of sculpture that developed in the area of Aphrodisias, in Caria, Asia Minor, modern Turkey. The site was a major cult center of an ancient Anatolian fertility goddess, and later of the goddess Aphrodite, and thus is associated with artistic production from the second millennium BCE or earlier. However, it truly flourished as an artistic center beginning with the reign of the Julio-Claudian emperors in the first century BCE and lasting until the fifth century CE. The sculptural style is characterized by the use of exquisite marble that was quarried nearby, a bichrome marble pallette, thematic sophistication, creative originality, and a wide distribution to many parts of the Roman Empire. Some scholars believe that a workshop of this school also existed in the city of Rome itself.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 指於小亞細亞卡里亞（Caria）的阿弗羅狄西亞地區（Aphrodisias），亦即今土耳其一地所發展出的雕塑風格。這個遺址是古代安納托力亞人（Anatolian）崇拜豐饒女神，也就是日後的愛神阿弗羅狄特（Aphrodite）的重地，所以自西元前兩千年或更早開始，該遺址便有與藝術製作相關的活動。然而，遲至西元前一世紀開始，這個地區才在朱利亞－克勞狄王朝（Julio-Claudian）的統治下，逐漸發展為藝術中心，持續至西元五世紀為止。該雕塑風格的特徵為使用自附近開採來的精緻大理石，一種雙色的大理石材（bichrome marble pallette），複雜細緻的題材運用，具原創性設計，以及廣泛遍佈羅馬帝國轄內許多地區。某些學者認為羅馬城中亦存在創作此種陶器的工坊。 |
| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar de beeldhouwstijl die zich ontwikkelde in het gebied van Aphrodisias, in Caria, Klein-Azië, het huidige Turkije. Het was een belangrijk centrum voor de verering van een oude Anatolische vruchtbaarheidsgodin en later van de godin Aphrodite en wordt daarom in verband gebracht met de artistieke voortbrengselen uit het tweede millennium v. Chr. of eerder. De bloeiperiode als artistiek centrum begon echter pas met de heerschappij van de Julisch-Claudische keizers in de 1ste eeuw v. Chr. en duurde tot de 5de eeuw n. Chr. Het beeldhouwwerk kenmerkt zich door het gebruik van verfijnd marmer dat in de buurt werd gewonnen, een tweekleurig marmerpalet, thematische subtiliteit, creatieve oorspronkelijkheid en een wijde verspreiding over grote delen van het Romeinse Rijk. Sommige geleerden menen dat ook in Rome zelf een werkplaats van deze school heeft bestaan. |
| Spanish ..... Se refiere al estilo de escultura que se desarrolló en el área de Afrodisias, en Caria, Asia Menor, Turquía, moderna. El sitio fue un importante centro de culto de una antigua diosa Anatolia de la fertilidad, y después de la diosa Afrodita y de esta manera está asociado con la producción artística del segundo milenio a.C o antes. Sin embargo, floreció verdaderamente como un centro artístico desde el reinado de los emperadores Julio-Claudianos en el siglo I a.C. hasta el siglo V d.C. El estilo escultural se caracteriza por el uso de mármol exquisito que se extraía de una cantera cercana, una paleta bicroma de mármol, sofisticación temática, originalidad creativa y una amplia distribución a muchas partes del Imperio Romano. Algunos estudiosos creen que un taller de esta escuela también existió en la misma ciudad de Roma. |
