Note: A style of watercolor painting used by artists working in Calcutta, India in the nineteenth century; the works produced were sold inexpensively to pilgrims to the nearby Kalighat temple. This style demonstrates the European influence on Indian folk art; not only was the English technique of transparent watercolor adopted, but European subjects and events were sometimes depicted. Overall, these rapidly produced paintings are characterized by bold colors, broad sweeping brush lines, simplified forms, and little or no backgrounds. Popular Hindu deities are most commonly depicted although scenes of contemporary life are found as well. The style, which arose to compete with inexpensive colored lithographs, soon lost the contest. Although it quickly disappeared, the Kalighat style was influential for a number of modern Indian painters.

| Dutch ..... Stijl van aquarelschilderen die in de 19de eeuw werd toegepast door kunstenaars in de Indiase stad Calcutta; de geproduceerde werken werden tegen lage prijzen verkocht aan pelgrims die de nabijgelegen Kalighat-tempel bezochten. Deze stijl verraadt de Europese invloeden op de Indiase volkskunst; men nam de Engelse techniek van transparant aquarelleren over, maar ook Europese onderwerpen en gebeurtenissen werden soms afgebeeld. Doorgaans worden deze in korte tijd geproduceerde werken gekenmerkt door felle kleuren, een brede penseelvoering, vereenvoudigde vormen en nauwelijks of geen achtergrond. Het vaakst werden de populaire hindoegodheden afgebeeld, maar ook zijn wel scènes uit het dagelijks leven aangetroffen. De stijl was bedoeld om te kunnen wedijveren met de goedkope kleurenlitho's, maar dat bleek al snel een verloren strijd. De Kalighatstijl was weliswaar geen lang leven beschoren, maar heeft niettemin een aantal moderne Indiase schilders beïnvloed. |

Un estilo de pintura en acuarela usado por artistas que trabajaban en Calcuta, India en el siglo XIX; las obras producidas se vendieron barato a los peregrinos al cercano templo Kalighat. Este estilo demuestra la influencia europea en el arte local indio; no sólo fue adoptada la técnica inglesa de acuarela transparente, sino que algunas veces fueron representados temas y eventos europeos. En conjunto, estas pinturas producidas rápidamente se caracterizan por colores pronunciados, líneas de pincel anchas, formas simplificadas, y poco o ningún fondo. Las deidades hindúes populares normalmente son las más comúnmente representadas aunque se encuentran escenas de la vida contemporánea también. El estilo que surgió para competir con litografías coloreadas baratas, pronto perdió la contienda. Aunque desapareció rápidamente, el estilo Kalighat influenció a varios pintores indios modernos. |
