Note: Sandstone that is rich in silica, particularly as free silica as opposed to silicates; the silica characterizes the cement or matrix which binds together the quartz particles of which sandstone is mainly composed. Pure siliceous sandstone is chemically inert, making it able to withstand a smokey environment; it is therefore a popular building stone in industrial areas. It is also hard and durable but difficult to work. Pure siliceous sandstone is white or cream in color; colors are due to impurities: yellow and red colors are due to the presence of iron oxides; green from glauconite; and black from manganese dioxide.

| Dutch ..... Zandsteen die rijk is aan silica, in het bijzonder als vrije silica, in tegenstelling tot silicaten. De silica is kenmerkend voor het cement of de matrix waardoor de kwartsdeeltjes worden gebonden die het hoofdbestanddeel vormen van zandsteen. Zuivere kiezelzandsteen is chemisch inert, een eigenschap die de steen bestand maakt tegen een rokerige omgeving, wat deze tot een populaire bouwsteen maakt in industriële gebieden. Kiezelzandsteen is hard en duurzaam, waardoor moeilijk te bewerken is. In zuivere vorm is de steen wit of crème van kleur. Andere kleuren zijn het gevolg van onzuiverheden: de aanwezigheid van ijzeroxiden veroorzaakt gele en rode kleuren, glauconiet zorgt voor een groene kleur en zwart is het gevolg van de aanwezigheid van mangaandioxide. |
| Spanish ..... Arenisca rica en sílice, en particular sílice libre, en contraste con silicatos. La sílice caracteriza el cemento o matriz que une las partículas de cuarzo, que son los componentes principales de la arenisca. La arenisca silícea pura es químicamente inerte, lo que le permite soportar un entorno de humo. Por lo tanto se usa con frecuencia para construcciones en áreas industriales. También es dura y durable, pero difícil de trabajar. La arenisca silícea pura es de color blanco o crema, coloreada cuando hay impurezas: los colores amarillo y rojo se deben a la presencia de óxidos de hierro, el verde a la glauconita y el negro al dióxido de manganeso.
