Note: Stately dances for two in moderate triple time, often taking the overall form of minuet-trio-minuet. The musical form was included in operas, Classical chamber works, and symphonies. The minuet originated in France and dominated aristocratic European ballrooms, particularly in France and England, from ca. 1650 to ca. 1750; over time, the dances became increasingly complex and stylized. Reputedly derived from the French folk dance "branle de Poitou." Some forms of the dance acquired more specific names, notably the "minuet de la cour." The court minuet used smaller steps and became slower and increasingly etiquette-laden and spectacular. It was especially popular at the court of Louis XIV of France.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 高雅的中板三拍子雙人舞蹈，通常採用複合三段體曲式（minuet-trio-minuet）結構，其樂曲形式可見於歌劇、古典室內樂及交響樂。小步舞源自法國，於西元1650年至1750年左右在歐洲貴族社交舞場合佔有主導地位，特別是在法國與英格蘭；隨著時代進展，其形式也漸趨複雜與風格化。據說此種舞蹈是從法國的民俗舞蹈「普瓦圖布朗萊舞（branle de Poitou）」衍生而來，其中某些形式有更特定的名稱，比如「宮廷小步舞（minuet de la cour）」；宮廷小步舞除舞步較小，節奏較為緩慢，更為講究禮儀外，場面也更為盛大，於法王路易十四的宮廷上尤其受到歡迎。 |
| Dutch ..... Een type statige dans voor twee personen in een driedelige maatsoort, vaak met de algemene vorm menuet-trio-menuet. De muzikale vorm werd gebruikt in opera's, klassieke kamermuziek en symfonieën. Het menuet ontstond in Frankrijk en domineerde tussen ca. 1650 en ca. 1750 de aristocratische Europese balzalen, met name in Frankrijk en Engeland. In de loop der tijd werd het steeds complexer en gestileerder. Het zou zijn afgeleid van de Franse volksdans 'branle de Poitou'. Sommige vormen van de dans kregen meer specifieke benamingen, zoals het 'minuet de la cour'. Dit hofmenuet bestond uit kleinere stappen en werd trager, waarbij etiquette en opvallende uiterlijke vormen steeds belangrijker werden. Het was vooral populair aan het hof van Lodewijk XIV van Frankrijk. |
