Note: Members of a species of gregarious tree squirrel native to the eastern United States excluding New England, north into the southern prairie provinces of Canada, and west to the Dakotas, Colorado, and Texas. Their habitat partially overlaps with the eastern gray squirrel, which is smaller and not as reddish in color as the fox squirrel. Fox squirrels are noted as living fossils, skeletally very similar the oldest known squirrel, Protosciurus, from the late Oligocene and early Miocene epochs.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 過著群居生活的樹松鼠，原生於美國東部，但不包括新英格蘭；涵蓋地區北至加拿大南部的草原三省，西至達科塔州、科羅拉多州以及德州。牠們的棲息地部份與灰松鼠重疊。灰松鼠體型較小，而且毛色不如狐松鼠紅。狐松鼠為有名的活化石，牠們的骨骼結構相似於最古老，存於漸新世(Oligocene)晚期至中新世(Miocene)早期的松鼠(Protosciurus)。 |
| Dutch ..... Leden van een in groepen levende boomeekhoornsoort die inheems is in het oosten van de Verenigde Staten, met uitzondering van New England, tot in de zuidelijke prairieprovincies van Canada en tot in Noord- en Zuid-Dakota, Colorado en Texas. Hun habitat overlapt deels die van de oostelijke grijze eekhoorn, die kleiner en minder rood van kleur is dan de zwarte eekhoorn. Zwarte eekhoorns worden wel aangemerkt als levende fossielen, aangezien hun skelet sterke gelijkenis vertoont met de oudste bekende eekhoorn, Protosciurus, uit het late Oligoceen en het vroege Mioceen. |
