Note: Refers to the largest school of Japanese Buddhism. It was founded by Shinran (1173-1262) and organized by Rennyo (1414-1499) and is based on simple yet exclusive devotion to Amida. Shinran, a disciple of Honen, was more radical than his teacher. Shinran believed that since Amida's grace is relevant to a good person, it was even more so to a sinner. Reliance on Amida is all that is needed for liberation. Only one sincere recitation of the 'nembutsu' is needed to be reborn in Amida's Pure Land. The nembutsu is seen as an act of gratitude rather than one of supplicating trust. This and other aspects of Jodo Shinshu (e.g. it is a lay movement with no monks or monasteries) made it extremely popular. The school split into two factions in the 17th century, the Ōtani and Honganji. Both factions remains powerful and popular today and have their main temples in Kyoto.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 日本佛教最大的宗派。由親鸞(Shinran, 1173-1262)創立，並由蓮如(Rennyo, 1414-1499)將其組織化，以單純而獨一崇拜阿彌陀為信仰基礎。親鸞是法然的弟子，思想比法然要來得激進。親鸞相信既然阿彌陀的恩賜與好人有關，應與罪人更為相關。只要依靠阿彌陀，就能獲得解脫。只要真誠「念佛」，就可在阿彌陀的淨土重生。念佛被視為感恩的行為，而不是在祈求相信。這點及淨土真宗的其他方面(例：其為不需僧人或僧院的世俗運動)使其極受歡迎。十七世紀時，本流派分成兩個派系：大谷(Ōtani)和本願(Honganji)。兩個派系至今仍很有力量且很受歡迎，並且在京都都有其總本山。 |
| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar de grootste richting binnen het Japanse boeddhisme. Jodo Shinshu werd gesticht door Shinran (1173-1262) en georganiseerd door Rennyo (1414-1499) en is gebaseerd op een simpele maar wel exclusieve toewijding aan Amida. Shinran, een leerling van Honen, was radicaler dan zijn leermeester en geloofde dat Amida’s genade van belang is voor een goed mens en daarom nog relevanter is voor een zondig mens. Vertrouwen op Amida is alles wat er nodig is voor bevrijding. Slechts één oprechte recitatie van de 'nembutsu' is nodig om te worden wedergeboren in het Zuivere Land van Amida. De nembutsu wordt veeleer beschouwd als een uiting van dankbaarheid dan als een smeekbede om vertrouwen. Dit en andere aspecten van Jodo Shinshu (bijvoorbeeld dat het een lekenbeweging is zonder monniken of kloosters) maakten de beweging uiterst populair. Zij raakte in de 17de eeuw verdeeld in twee facties, de Otani en de Honganji. Beide zijn tegenwoordig nog altijd invloedrijk en populair en hebben hun hoofdtempels in Kyoto. |
