Note: Hybrid offspring produced by the mating of a female horse and a male donkey. The less-frequent cross between a female ass and a male horse results in a hinny, or hinney, which is smaller than a mule. Mules were beasts of burden in Asia Minor at least 3,000 years ago and are still used today in many parts of the world because of their ability to withstand hardships and perform work under conditions too severe for many other draft and pack animals. Mules are usually sterile.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 母馬與公驢交配而產下的混種後代。母驢和公馬交配較少見，產下的為騠或稱駃騠，體型比騾小。三千年前，騾為小亞細亞地區(Asia Minor)的役畜，由於能承受艱苦的工作，能於對許多役畜和馱畜都顯過於嚴苛的環境下工作，因此在世界許多地方仍作為役畜之用。騾通常不具生育能力。 |
