Note: A fossiliferous limestone composed of coarse shells or shell fragments which is loosely cemented by an infiltration of carbonate of lime; its name derives from the Spanish word for 'cockleshell.' Coquina is a detrital rock because it is formed from debris and is distinguished from coquinoid limestone which is formed in situ and is composed of shell material in a fine-grained matrix.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Fossielhoudend kalksteen dat is samengesteld uit losjes samenhangende stukjes schelp die aan elkaar zijn verbonden door kalkcarbonaat; de naam is afgeleid van het Spaanse woord voor 'hartschelp'. Schelpkalk is een erosiegesteente omdat het is gevormd uit brokstukken en wordt onderscheiden van schelpkalksteen dat ter plaatse is gevormd en bestaat uit schelpmateriaal in een fijnmazige matrix. 
Spanish ..... Caliza fosilífera compuesta de conchas o fragmentos de concha gruesos apenas cementados por infiltración de carbonato de cal. Su nombre proviene del español para conchas de moluscos. La coquina es una roca detrítica, porque se forma por residuos, y se distingue de la caliza coquinoide porque ha sido formada in situ y está compuesta de material de concha en una matriz de grano fino.
