Note: A measure of digital resolution as determined by the number of bits used to render each pixel or sample. Higher bit depths indicate a higher tonal range or fidelity. Bit depth for color defines the amount of color available to each of the pixels in digital image processing and display. This is derived from the number of bits used to define color within a digital image as determined by its file format. Audio bit depth is defined by the amount of bits in a sample in digital audio, which directly corresponds to the resolution of the sample and the dynamic range of the resulting sound produced or recorded.

| Dutch ..... Een maat voor digitale resolutie, bepaald door het aantal bits dat wordt gebruikt om elke pixel of sample weer te geven. Een grotere bitdiepte betekent een groter tonaal bereik en een nauwkeurigere weergave. Toegepast op kleur betekent het de hoeveelheid kleuren die beschikbaar is voor elke pixel bij digitale beeldverwerking en -weergave. Het is dan afgeleid van het aantal bits waarmee kleur binnen een digitale afbeelding wordt gedefinieerd, zoals dit wordt bepaald door de bestandsindeling. Toegepast op audio betekent het de hoeveelheid bits in een sample digitale audio, die direct overeenkomt met de resolutie van de sample en het dynamische bereik van het geproduceerde of opgenomen geluid.
