Note: Standard mosaic process and technique using small cubes of uniform size known as tesserae, made of hard materials such as stone and glass, applied to a ground to form ornamental patterns and pictures. While opus tessellatum was initially a cheap substitute for finer mosaic work executed in the more complex technique of "opus vermiculatum," it eventually became the dominant technique and remained so throughout the Middle Ages.

| Dutch ..... Standaardproces en -techniek voor mozaïek, waarbij kleine kubusvormige blokjes van dezelfde grootte, de zogenaamde tesserae, gemaakt van hard materiaal zoals steen of glas, op een grondvlak worden aangebracht om ornamentele patronen en afbeeldingen te vormen. Oorspronkelijk was opus tessellatum een goedkoop alternatief voor fijner mozaïekwerk dat werd uitgevoerd met de complexere techniek van het 'opus vermiculatum', maar later werd het de meest gebruikte techniek en dat bleef zo in de hele middeleeuwen. |
