Note: Sharp, horny, narrow, arched structures on the digits of birds, reptiles, many mammals, and some amphibians. Claws are composed of hardened (keratinized) modifications of the epidermis. Claws may be adapted for scratching, clutching, digging, or climbing. The term is also used for similar structures on the feet of insects, crustacea, and other lower animals.

Additional Notes:
German ..... Scharfe, hornartige, schmale oder gewölbte Strukturen an den Händen oder Füßen von Vögeln, Reptilien, vielen Säugetieren und einigen Amphibien. Krallen bestehen aus gehärtetem (keratinisierten) Veränderungen der Epidermis. Klauen können für das Kratzen, Umklammern, Graben oder Klettern angepasst sein. Der Begriff wird auch für ähnliche Strukturen an den Füßen von Insekten, Krebsen und anderen niederen Tieren verwendet.
