Note: Red dye produced from the hot water extraction of any of several tropical trees of the Caesalpinia genus. Its principal colorant is brasilin, a hydroxyanthraquinone. Used to dye textiles as early as the 12th century in Europe; the color is not lightfast and fades when heated.

| Dutch ..... Een natuurlijke rode verfstof die wordt geproduceerd door heetwaterextractie uit een van verschillende tropische bomen van het geslacht Caesalpinia. Brazielhout werd al in de 12e eeuw in Europa gebruikt om textiel te verven. De voornaamste kleurstof is brasiline, een hydroxyanthraquinone. De kleur is niet lichtecht en wordt vaal bij verhitting. |
