Note: Refers most often to the ideas of a heterogeneous religious movement of the late 17th and 18th centuries that flourished mainly in Britain. Deism also became very popular in 18th-century Germany. The movement was concerned with defending the rationality of religion and belief in God in the face of rising skepticism, especially as a consequence of Newton's laws. According to Deist writers, there exists a supreme being who initiated creation and is thus the basis of reality, but who does not intervene in the world and its natural laws (i.e. does not answer prayers or perform miracles). Nevertheless, Deism holds that religion is natural to humanity, and emphasizes natural religion as opposed to revealed religion or the teachings of churches. Natural religion comes from a certain body of religious knowledge that is inborn in everyone or that can be acquired through reason. Important Deist writings include Matthew Tindal's 'Christianity as Old as the Creation' (1730), the so-called 'Deist Bible.' Other important English Deists were Lord Herbert of Cherbury and Anthony Ashley Cooper.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 最常指十七世紀末及十八世紀主要盛行於英國的異質宗教運動。十八世紀時，於德國亦十分興盛。此運動面對懷疑主義之興起，主張維護宗教與信仰神的合理性，尤其在牛頓定律提出之後。根據自然神教的著述，造物的神是存在的，因此亦是現實的基礎，但卻不介入世界及其自然定律（例如，不回應禱告或展現神跡）。然而，自然神論相信宗教是合乎人性的，並著重與天啟教或教會傳道相反的自然宗教。自然神論源自每個人與生俱來，或可藉由理性而得的特定宗教認知。重要的自然神論作品包括馬修廷德爾(Matthew Tindal)的《基督教與創世同齡(Christianity as Old as the Creation)》(1730)，即所謂的《自然神論聖經(Deist Bible)》。其他重要的英國自然神論家有雪堡的赫伯特勳爵(Lord Herbert of Cherbury)及沙夫茲伯里(Anthony Ashley Cooper.)。

| Dutch ..... Verwijst meestal naar de ideeën van een heterogene religieuze beweging uit de late 17de en de 18de eeuw die voornamelijk in Groot-Brittannië bloeide. Het deïsme werd ook erg populair in het 18de-eeuwse Duitsland. De beweging hield zich bezig met de verdediging van de rationaliteit van de religie en het geloof in God tegenover het, vooral als gevolg van de wetten van Newton, toenemende scepticisme. Volgens de deïstische schrijvers bestaat er een opperwezen dat de schepping is begonnen en daardoor de basis van de werkelijkheid vormt, maar dat niet ingrijpt in de wereld en haar natuurwetten (dat wil zeggen: geen gebeden verhoort of wonderen verricht). Desondanks stelt het deïsme dat religie een natuurlijk aspect van de mensheid is en legt het de nadruk op natuurlijke godsdienst in tegenstelling tot geopenbaarde godsdiensten of de leer van kerken. Natuurlijke godsdienst komt voort uit een zekere hoeveelheid religieuze kennis die iedereen is aangeboren of die kan worden verworven door middel van de rede. Tot de belangrijke deïstische geschriften behoort 'Christianity as Old as the Creation' (1730) van Matthew Tindal, dat wel de 'deïstische Bijbel' wordt genoemd. | Spanish ..... Se refiere a menudo a las ideas de un heterogéneo movimiento religioso de fines del siglo XVII y siglo XVIII que florecieron principalmente en Gran Bretaña. El deísmo llegó a ser muy popular también en la Alemania del siglo XVIII. El movimiento se preocupaba por defender la racionalidad de la religión y de la creencia en Dios ante el creciente escepticismo, sobre todo como consecuencia de las leyes de Newton. Según escritores deístas, existe un ser supremo que comenzó la creación y de ese modo la base de la realidad, pero quién no interviene en el mundo y sus leyes naturales (es decir no contesta oraciones o realiza milagros). No obstante, el Deísmo sostiene que la religión es natural a la humanidad, y enfatiza la religión natural como opuesta a la religión revelada o las enseñanzas de las iglesias. La religión natural proviene de un cierto cuerpo de conocimiento religioso que es innato en todos o que puede adquirirse a través de la razón. Las escrituras deísdistas importantes incluyen "La Cristiandad tan antigua como la Creación" (1730) de Matthew Tindal, la también llamada "Biblia del Deisdísmo".
