Note: Technique of painting with pigments dispersed in molten wax. It is applied while warm to panels or murals with a brush or palette, and fixed by passing a heat source over the surface to fuse and permanently bond the paint. It is an ancient technique that was particularly popular in ancient Greece. The term derives from a Greek word meaning 'burnt in.' Although it fell into disuse in the 8th or 9th centuries C.E., there continue to be exponents of the technique today. For the technique of decorating clay, use "encaustic decoration."

| Dutch ..... Te gebruiken voor de schildertechniek met pigmenten die zijn opgelost in gesmolten was. Het wordt warm aangebracht op panelen of muren met een borstel of een spatel en gefixeerd door met een warmtebron over het oppervlak te gaan om de verf permanent te smelten en vast te zetten. Deze oude techniek was vooral populair in het oude Griekenland. De Engelse term is afgeleid van het Grieks en betekent 'ingebrand'. Hoewel de techniek in de 8ste en 9de eeuw in onbruik raakte, zijn er ook tegenwoordig nog exponenten ervan. Gebruik 'versieringen inbranden' voor de techniek van het versieren van klei. |

É uma técnica antiga que era particularmente popular na Grécia antiga. O termo deriva de uma palavra grega que significa 'queimado'. Embora tenha caído em desuso nos séculos VIII ou IX d.C., continua a haver expoentes da técnica hoje. Para a técnica de decorar argila, use "decoração encáustica". |
